Outdoor spaces have become an extension of the home—places for everyday relaxation, entertaining, and spending more time together. It’s no surprise that outdoor kitchens continue to grow in popularity as more families discover the benefits of cooking, dining, and hosting outside in a space designed for connection and comfort.

Outdoor kitchens are usually organized around a few key essentials: a primary cooking station (usually a grill or an oven), a sink with running water, a few storage units, maybe a fridge – and durable surfaces for food prep. Speaking of, Caesarstone Porcelain slabs are ideal as countertops for outdoor kitchens due to their durability, UV-resistance, minimal maintenance and ability to withstand all weather conditions.

Planning an outdoor kitchen? We’ve assembled a few helpful layout tips:

  • Remember the “kitchen work triangle” rule? It certainly applies to outdoor kitchens, as well. To increase your cooking effectiveness, keep your grill, sink and fridge next to one another. But don’t crowd them too close together, either. A little space between the three will improve your workflow.
  • Vast prep space should be located next to the grill. Including porcelain countertops on both sides of the grill is an excellent idea.
  • Adding an island with a porcelain countertop can work wonders both as a work space and a seating area. If you’re planning a bar seating arrangement, you can design a porcelain overhang on one side of the island.
  • Never neglect the weather: If you’re in a hot climate, add ample shade via a pergola, awning or umbrellas. If you’re expecting cold, add heaters or even a fire pit. And don’t forget to prepare drainage infrastructure for when it rains.

Here are a few technical instructions, written by our experts:

Getting ready to install countertops in your outdoor kitchen? You’ll be happy to know that we’ve prepared a guide with everything fabricators and installers need to know for indoor and outdoor kitchen fabrication and installation. Here are several instructions that pertain specifically to outdoor kitchens*.

  • Your porcelain countertop must be installed on a stable, uniform, level base. A concrete or brick base will do the trick.
  • Nothing is more annoying than adhesives that turn yellow over time. This is why using adhesives suitable for outdoor use is so important. We also recommend using adhesives designed specifically for porcelain, which match the color of your chosen design.
  • Adding a grill unit between several countertop parts? Make sure the grill is supported by a concrete or brick structure or a dedicated frame – and not by the material itself.
  • There should be a 10 mm (3/8”) gap between your countertop and your grill. The gap should be filled with flexible, heat resistant, thermal insulation material.
  • If your grill is situated next to a wall or a splashback, make sure to maintain a distance of 100 mm (4”) between them.
  • If you have a square or rectangular grill, do not completely surround the grill with the countertop surface.  It is important that one side remain open.
  • Ovens and any heat-emitting devices and appliances should not be placed directly on the porcelain countertop. If you do so, the countertop may crack due to inadequate ventilation. Make sure to maintain a height clearance of at least 100 mm (4”) between the base of the appliance and the countertop.
  • Don’t forget about ventilation. If you’re installing a grill unit in your outdoor kitchen, rely on the appliance installation manual for guidance on how to add adequate ventilation to support your chosen design.
